Fleas!

Q: What did one flea say to the other flea?
A: “Shall we walk or take a dog?”

Sorry the jokes are getting worse!

The dreaded Flea, no one really wants to talk about this biting critter however, here are some facts about the Flea!

Fleas are small and are a very specialized parasitic that belong to the Order Siphonaptera.  There are currently about 90 different species of fleas in Australia, however the most common Ctenocephalides felis or generally known as the CAT FLEA (as shown in image above).

The adult fleas are blood suckers with the majority feeding on mammals (Cats, Dogs, Pigs and in some cases Birds).

Some facts on the life cycle of fleas:

The adult female flea lays 4-8 eggs after each blood meal. She can lay several hundred more in her lifetime.  Most eggs are laid on the host; and as these usually fall off they can be found in any areas visited by the host animal.  The most common area with the concentration of flea eggs is where the host animal sleeps.  Eggs usually hatch in 2-14 days.  Larvae feed on available organic material like crumbs, human skin scales that may accumulate in carpets, furniture & pet beds.  The feeding period for a flea larvae is usually around 15 days.  When feeding is complete the larva spins a cocoon to protect itself.  The larva pupates within the cocoon, which can last between 7-14 days.
Adult fleas may live anywhere between 100-500 days and can live long periods without food.

Obviously we don’t need to go to extreme measures however, I think most people have tried the Flea Bomb treatment at sometime however, you need to break the cycle and the best method is to call in an expert.
